How we test

The 12-Step Lab-Test Methodology

No paid placement. No phantom benchmarks. Every product on this site passes all 12 steps, or it gets cut.

  1. 01

    NSF Certified for Sport check

Cross-reference brand and SKU in NSF Certified for Sport public list 2026. If absent, downgrade to Informed Sport tier.

  2. 02

    Informed Sport batch lookup

Verify batch number on tub matches Informed Sport database. No batch match = automatic rejection.

  3. 03

    Third-party HPLC sourcing

Pull most recent HPLC result from independent lab (Eurofins, NSF, LGC). Compare protein g/100 g vs label. Tolerance under 5%.

  4. 04

    Heavy metals scan

Confirm ICP-MS results for lead, arsenic, mercury, cadmium below FDA action limits.

  5. 05

    Banned-substance screen

WADA banned-substance free required. Auto-fail if positive on prohormones, stimulants, diuretics.

  6. 06

    Per-serving protein math

Compute actual protein per serving via HPLC g/100 g times serving size. Feeds the true $/g protein calc.

  7. 07

    True $/g protein calc

Total price divided by total grams of actual protein (not powder). Single most honest value metric.

  8. 08

    Cookie duration audit

Affiliate cookie duration over 30 days preferred. Anything below 14 days flagged as buyer-hostile.

  9. 09

    Commission disclosure

Public commission rate. We refuse partnerships hiding rates from publishers.

  10. 10

    Home-gym stress test

Olivia uses each product 30 days minimum in her Brooklyn home gym. Real performance journal kept.

  11. 11

    Recovery and GI tolerance

Daily log of HRV, GI tolerance, mixability, taste. Anything below 6/10 GI tolerance disqualified.

Reader FAQ

10 honest answers on cert, lab, $/g

Questions sent in by readers and gym members. If yours is missing, hit Olivia on Instagram.

What is the difference between NSF Certified for Sport and Informed Sport ?
Both are third-party banned-substance certifications. NSF Certified for Sport (US-based, NSF International) tests every lot for 280+ banned substances and audits manufacturing GMP. Informed Sport (UK-based, LGC) tests every batch for 250+ banned substances. NSF runs more facility audits, Informed Sport more frequent batch tests. For pro / NCAA / Olympic athletes, look for either logo printed directly on the product.
How do I know the protein on the label is actually in the tub ?
You read the third-party HPLC test result. We list the most recent HPLC for every product on our shortlist. Honest brands publish HPLC openly. Dishonest ones hide behind nitrogen-spike tests which inflate apparent protein with cheap free amino acids.
Are heavy metals in whey a real concern ?
For most clean-label whey, no - lead / arsenic / cadmium / mercury are below FDA action limits. For plant proteins and collagens sourced cheaply, yes - heavy metals can exceed limits. We verify every product publishes ICP-MS results below FDA thresholds.
Why is true $/g protein different from price per tub ?
Two 5 lb tubs at the same price can have very different actual protein content. Brand A might be 75% protein, Brand B 90%. True $/g protein = price / total grams of protein (not powder), normalized for HPLC actual content. The most honest comparison metric.
Should I cycle creatine ?
No. The cycling-creatine idea is outdated. Current research (Kreider 2023 review) shows 5 g daily creatine monohydrate is safe and effective continuously. No loading phase needed if you start now and stay consistent.
Is AG1 worth 79 USD per month ?
Depends on context. If you eat 8+ servings of vegetables daily and have your blood panel dialed in, no. If you travel often, skip breakfast, or have a deficient diet, AG1 is one of the few greens that publishes NSF Certified for Sport plus third-party heavy metals tests. The $/g is high but the micronutrient coverage is honest.
Why dont you list certain popular brands ?
We only list brands that pass our 12-step methodology. The 3 most common rejection reasons : no published HPLC, no banned-substance certification, or cookie duration below 14 days.
How do I read the batch number on a tub ?
Look on the side or bottom for a code like LOT 2026-Q1-A2-USA. First 4 digits are year, then quarter or month. Cross-reference this batch in NSF or Informed Sport databases to confirm the lot was tested.
Are your affiliate links biased ?
Our ranking follows the methodology, not commission rates. Nutricost (which refuses our methodology audit) appears on the comparison matrix despite paying lower commission - honest comparison matters more. Every commission rate is public on /affiliate-disclosure/.
I am pre-workout sensitive. What stack do you recommend ?
Skip stims-heavy pre-workouts. A clean stack : 5 g creatine monohydrate + 6 g citrulline malate + 3 g beta-alanine, 30 min before training. All three are NSF Certified for Sport available. Stack cost about 0.85 USD per day.
