Certifications Decoded - NSF vs Informed Sport vs USDA
What each certification logo actually means, what it tests for, and which one matters for which audience.
NSF Certified for Sport
NSF International (Ann Arbor, MI) - founded 1944
Tests every lot for 280+ banned substances (WADA + NCAA list).
Audits manufacturing facility for GMP compliance.
Verifies label claim vs HPLC test (active ingredient match).
Heavy metals scan: lead, arsenic, cadmium, mercury below FDA limits.
Used by all major US pro leagues (MLB, NFL, NHL, NBA, PGA).
Verdict: Highest tier in the US. If you compete or get drug-tested, look for this logo first.
Informed Sport
LGC Group (UK) - founded 1842 as UK govt lab
Tests every batch for 250+ banned substances (WADA list).
Most frequent batch testing in the industry (monthly cycle).
Used by UK Sport, Premier League, Olympic teams worldwide.
Less facility audit than NSF, but higher batch frequency.
Two tiers : Informed Sport (every batch) and Informed Choice (sample).
Verdict: Equivalent rigor to NSF for banned substances. Better for international athletes.
Third-Party HPLC
Eurofins, NSF Labs, Labdoor, ConsumerLab
HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography) measures actual protein g/100 g.
Independent lab not financially tied to the brand.
Published test results on brand site or in third-party report.
Catches the "nitrogen-spike" fraud (cheap amino acids inflating apparent protein).
Verdict: Necessary but not sufficient. Look for HPLC + banned-substance cert combined.
USDA Organic
USDA National Organic Program - founded 1990
Certifies ingredient sourcing : no synthetic pesticides, no GMO.
Does NOT test for banned substances or heavy metals.
Useful for plant proteins, greens, herbs.
Less relevant for whey isolate or creatine monohydrate.
Verdict: Sourcing-only signal. Combine with NSF or Informed Sport for athlete-grade.

"None published" or "No publish" entries are red-tagged. We list them so you can verify our methodology - if a brand refuses to publish HPLC, that is the deal-breaker.
